Transponder keys were developed in Germany due to the large number of automotive theft throughout Europe. The motivation to develop a anti-theft system via a car key grew as did the number of stolen automobiles. The numbers were staggering and a solution was imminent. The Allianz Insurance Group influenced german car manufacturers to adopt immobilizer anti theft key systems which later became a standard for car and truck manufacturers throughout the industry.
Transponder keys are electronically coded by automotive manufacturers and the purpose was to eliminate automotive theft due to a manipulation of the steering column or by getting a copy of a key.
